Every time I see Flogging Molly perform live, I think of what Dave King told me a few years back of their performances: "A wise man told me once to play every show like its my last... and that man was Angus Young." So say that Flogging Molly's performance at the Grove in Sacramento was played in such a way would be an understatement. But let's back up a bit. It would be easy to forget the opening band; that is, unless the opening band is Jackson United. Formed by Chris from the Foo Fighters and Max from the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, this band owned the stage, making sure that no one was sitting down during the show. Jackson United opened with their single, 21st Century Fight Song and made the most of their 14 song set, leaving fans who didn't know the band before saying things like "this is the greatest opening band I have ever seen, and I hate opening bands." Flogging Molly took the stage next for an early set that started around 8:15 PM. The crowd erupted in applause as their favorite punk rock band danced their way into Likes Of You Again. At first when I heard that Flogging Molly would be playing in Sacramento, I was hesitant about the crowd because of Sac's lack of music venues, but the line to get into the venue was off into the sunset and the fans did not disappoint. Dave King and crew played a number of fan favorites, making sure to hit everything from Swagger> to their newest full-length album, Within a Mile of Home, not letting the Guinness have time to settle. A few songs into the set, King noted that he had a flu today, but no illness would hold this man back. By the time Flogging Molly came back for their encore, the crowd was in awe to see King take the stage solo, lit up like a hero, playing World Alive, followed by the fan-favorite Black Friday Rule. About halfway through BFR, the other six members of the band joined King on stage, finishing the show on a high note and not missing a beat. If you like sitting down at concerts, then Flogging Molly isn't for you. However, if you like being a part of the concert experience, then Flogging Molly is a band that you can't miss.
